Three members of law enforcement were killed and more than a dozen people sustained injuries in an apparently intentional gas explosion at a country home in the northern part of Italy.

Sequence of Events

The detonation occurred as officers and emergency crews entered the house near the Verona region to carry out an eviction order for a brother and sister trio in their late 50s and mid-60s.

The three deceased individuals were members of the Carabinieri force.

Arrests and Aftermath

A man and a woman were taken into custody at the site and another man who ran away subsequent to the incident was apprehended shortly later. Each of them have been transported to medical facility.

The blast could be audible as far as 3 miles distant and footage from the area displayed the building reduced to a heap of debris.

“This is a time for grieving,” commented Interior Minister Minister Piantedosi, who mentioned that efforts had been made to remove the three siblings in the earlier times.

Property Situation

The leader of the Veneto region, President Zaia, explained the property was under an eviction order due to financial obligations incurred by the three owners.

Conflict resolution experts had been assigned to speak to the siblings who had barricaded themselves into the home. When the Carabinieri came soon after 03:00 (01:00 GMT), authorities believe one of the siblings caused the detonation.

“Upon entering the house, we were confronted with an act of absolute madness,” regional commander Commander Papagno told reporters.

A propane tank had been set off, and the explosion immediately struck our personnel,” he said.

Molotov cocktails were also found at the site, the Interior Minister confirmed.

Injuries and Destruction

The wounded by the blast comprised eleven more officers of the police force as well as a trio of personnel of national police and a emergency responder.

According to the local prosecutor, the property was in a derelict state and had lacked electrical service.

The prosecutor thought the explosion had taken place on a story above the doorway and told journalists it was a “premeditated and voluntary homicide”. Shortly before the incident, he revealed personnel had “heard a whistle, likely the gas cylinders being turned on”.

Community Reaction

“All of us understood the scenario was critical,” neighbors told Italian media, adding that the three had in the past stated to “cause an explosion” rather than be evicted.

“The incident exacted a ‘dreadful, extremely sad and dramatic price’.”

Defence Minister Guido Crosetto united with other political leaders in commemorating the three officers who had lost their lives in the performance of their duties.
